Viewer beware! 300 is a bloody, gruesome and ferocious movie that takes you through the events surrounding the Spartan war battle of Thermopylae. It’s also a spectacular old-fashioned epic told in the modern idiom: it combines live action with virtual backgrounds that brings the masterful battle scenes to life. It is a beautiful looking movie that commits you fully to the 300 Spartan warriors led by King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) as they stand up against Xerxes and his massive Persian army.
The Spartans are a tough bunch who discards imperfect babies to keep their line full of the strongest. The boys are trained from an early age how to fight and to never retreat. At age seven, they are sent out into the wild and they return as Spartan warriors or they do not return.
Trouble for the Spartans begins when the king kills messengers from Xerxes who have come to offer gifts in exchange for their surrender and allegiance. In accordance with Spartan law the king seeks permission from the keepers of the oracle to go to war. When he is denied, he and his band of 300 Spartans volunteers go to meet their adversary while Queen Gorgo’s (Lena Headey) stays and does all that she can to sway the politicians into sending reinforcements to help fight the Persians.
They march towards the Hot Gates at Thermopylae, a narrow cliff pass that is also the only route into Sparta for any invading army. Here the 300 Spartans stand up against the tens of thousands of Persians repeated attacks, which test their skills and valor. One of the most noteworthy sequences is of Leonidas fighting where the action slows down and then speeds up: thus showing the combination of power, grace and timing, a great touch.
Despite the fact that the movie really does not have any big name actors they are more than adequate and the movie works. The Spartans had obviously done their homework or more accurately put their” gym work” and sported impressive ripped abs which they were able to show off throughout the movie. Lena Headey proves a tough beauty who embodies the phrase “only Spartan women give birth to real men”
300is based on the graphic novel by frank Miller and co-written/directed by Zack Snyder. Together they have made an impressive movie: just remember to take a dose of testosterone before going to the theatre!
Rating: Four Stars
