The escape route for Pope’s of old. The wall disappearing into the trees connects the Vatican to the old Roman Fortress. The pope could run along the top of that wall without being seen from below.

Thanks for reminding me that, in spite of three years of Latin in high school and two more years in college (I’m a glutton for punishment) I’ve still never been to Italy. Now I need to make sure I get the right kind of hat before I go–although the car is pretty much out of reach.
