Window Boxes

Another great way to add color and interest to your house and garden is by using window boxes. There are many different types on the market and I’ve used both wooden and plastic boxes with success. There are also easy to make if you have some basic tools and want to give homemade charm and individuality. Whatever type you decide on you need to consider the following:

  • Window size - Check your window measurements before buying your window box
  • Style and color - Pick a style and color that enhance your window
  • Brackets - Make sure that you have brackets that will hold the weight of the box, flowers and compost (wet as well as dry weight) and will work on your frame.
  • Drainage holes - If there are no drainage holes then drill three holes at regular intervals in the base

Window boxes like any containers can be adapted for any season but I generally pick flowers that will do well all from late spring through summer and will give me a continuous array of color.

window-box.jpgAssemble your plants and decide on design and placement. Taller plants at the back and smaller in the middle and trailing plants to the front and sides (see key above for guidance)

Method.

  1. Plant up your window box at the end of spring
  2. Add a layer of crocks or pebbles and add the compost
  3. Plant the pelargonium, busy lizzies , then infill with chamomile and other trailing plants.
  4. Water them well

Flowers will bloom from June to September and will do best in sun or sun partial shade. Water twice daily if hot and feed with miracle grow one a week for healthy, lustrous blooms!

Don’t forget to add those water absorption crystals to keep the roots cool and help keep the soil moist for longer periods of time. But be careful, a little goes a long way!
