I recently posted my findings on Democrats here and this is the same look at the leading Republican candidates.
In General: The Republicans seem to be indifferent to senior issues. I am quite surprised by this because politicians play the numbers. Not only is there a large block of seniors but also there is a huge surge of prospective seniors in the baby boomers, the oldest of which are now sixty years old. People like me are sizing candidates up in a different way than ever before and the Republicans are blowing it. How do they think I am going to vote? The next President will be in power when I retire and new issues are on the table for me.
I don’t understand why they don’t get it. I am not alone. The average age of our population is rising and they are not addressing the concerns of that population. At this rate I may never see another Republican President, and this from a lifelong Republican voter.
Social Security
John McCain: McCain is a supporter of the Bush plan to privatize a part of the Social Security savings. That is “personal SS accountsâ€. I have never really seen anyone layout the details and impact of that plan. I can find no reporting of a McCain plan. His website does not list this as an issue.
Rudy Giuliani: Obviously he has no track record since he is not a part of today’s Federal government. The issues section of his web site shows no reference to Social Security. I don’t know where he stands.
Mitt Romney: I can find no evidence that Romney sees this as an issue.
Medicare
I can sum them all up by saying I see no evidence of any activism on this issue.
Bottom Line: I am disappointed with what I see. I now believe the Presidency will go the way of the house.
