Hanging baskets are one of the easiest ways to bring color and pizazz to the outside of your house and give it a welcome appearance. Today there are many types of baskets available including the plastic coated wire baskets which come complete with the fibrous matting liner which help retain water. Here is a suggestion for a summer basket that will bloom all summer but you can mix and match from a huge variety of annuals available to give you the perfect basket for your house.
You Will Need
A plastic coated wire basket (14inch in diameter)
Moss
Fibrous liner
Potting compost
Begonias
Pendulous begonias
Purple brachycomes
Plectostachys
Lobelia
Petunias
Variegated ground ivy
Method
Assemble your plants
Plan your plants , decide the position of each plant that will give the most pleasing appearance
Line the whole basket with moss
Add the fibrous liner, cutting holes for lower planting if desired
Fill half the liner with potting soil
Remove the plants from their pots
Thread lobelia and ivy into the base from the outside
Add the other plants
Fill to the brim with compost
Firm in the plants and water well
Location
In full sun to part shade. Leave plenty of room around the basket because it will become very full
Points
Water daily and apply a liquid feed ( like miracle grow) once a week. Deadhead petunias, lobelia regularly for continuous blooms
