8 Reasons Why Older People Need Cell Phones

A few years ago my wife took a wrong turn in a blizzard and ended up stranded and not knowing exactly where she was. Of course, she wasn’t dressed for the bitterly cold weather and neither did she have a cell phone. She walked some distance across an open field and eventually found a home that let her use their phone. The weather was so cold that she never really did understand how threatening that was. Following are my reasons why older people need cell phones:

The story above could easily have turned out worse than it did. What if she had further to walk to find a house? If she had a cell phone she could have stayed warm in the car. It’s about safety.
Your kids worry about you. It gives them peace of mind if they know they can reach you.
Aging people can get lost and modern phones have GPS maps in them.
We are about to take a long trip with wide-open spaces between cities. Even though I have AAA coverage it isn’t much use if I can’t call them. This is about your own peace of mind.
911 when you need it.
Modern cell phones have built in phone books, which mean you don’t have to remember peoples phone numbers. That’s a huge plus, as the memory gets weaker.
If you are taking a trip make sure that you have phone numbers in your cell phone so you can get directions if you get lost. For example, the hotels phone number.
You can put the word ICE in front of a contact to designate that person as the “In Case Of Emergency” contact. Mine is my wife so it is “Ice Wife Name” where name is my wife’s name. It’s simple for anyone to make that call from my phone if they look in its phone book.
