This may be a very unpopular thing to say but I think it is the truth. I will draw the line at illegal immigrants but we must recognize the fact that we older folks will need more legal immigrants in the very near future. Our need stems from the fact that there will be too many people drawing Social Security retirement checks and not enough people paying into it. The government didn’t save anything so the wheels will fall off eventually. That is, unless there are more people in the country than planned for. Illegal immigrants don’t pay their fair share; that is a big problem. Legal immigrants pay their fair share in taxes, which helps support seniors when they need it.
Companies like Microsoft have been saying for years that they need more skilled workers. Of course those are high paying jobs that pay large amounts in taxes. If these workers cannot be found here then we would be smart to bring them into the country. Its interesting to observe that the economy has been able to absorb all those women going to work plus immigrants plus illegal immigrants and yet we have an unemployment rate of just 4.5% currently. That is, everyone who wants a job has a job, including the illegals. That economic performance is remarkable. There isn’t a single European country that can match that. The lesson is that not only can the economy handle it but also it needs it. It is not an issue of jobs or the economy. We just plain need it.
When we wise up to the fact that we need more immigrants, not less, then we will be on the way to overcoming the future breakdown of senior services. We just need our government to be a little pickier.
