One day I had a brainwave; at least I thought it was. Wouldn’t it be fun to go fishing with my grandsons? They were about five years old at the time and had been with their fathers before so I’m thinking it should be plain sailing. I arranged to meet them and their fathers at the local pond for maybe an hour of fun. Things didn’t turn out quite as planned. The first five minutes or so seemed to go well. Fishing poles were baited and fathers diligently showed how to cast and wait. I guess the waiting was too much. It wasn’t long before lines were tangled and frustration set in. The fishing was resumed with help from dads until one boy found a rock. Of course it made a lovely splash and all thought “what fun”, where’s my rock? Fishing gave way to splashing. Their thoughtful fathers, with prior experience to guide them, had thrown some Tonka toys in their cars and these became the momentary focus. Digging dirt was more fun and way more action. Indeed they discovered they could combine their two favorite pass times and dig up rocks to throw in the water. About this time fatherly love was turning to exasperation. I commented to one that I would be up for a wager on who would fall in the water first. Within two minutes I had won the bet as a loud shriek hit the airwaves and one boy was seen up to his knees in our little pond. It seemed that the water was evil and had to be gotten off the little boy immediately. The noise was deafening and every fish in the neighborhood left our little corner of the pond. It’s been a while since we have tried this again. Ah well, perhaps next year their attention span might go beyond five minutes…..and then again.

the only thing missing seems to be the hook in the mouth “Something about Mary” scene.
