I don’t remember much about being five or six but I do know that I hadn’t got a clue what make of clothes I was wearing or if my hair cut (thanks to mom and her non to sharp scissors ) was even remotely ‘cool’. What was “cool” anyway? I also know that a mini-facial would have been completely lost on me and I would rather have been playing chase or pretend with my friends. Of course that was a different time and place and I know that kids today are bombarded with stuff that was never an issue when I was young. One of the latest trends is spas aimed at pampering your 5-12 year old with a variety of services. So what exactly do these spas offer ?

Sweet & Sassy offers haircuts, spa treatments and birthday parties for the under-12 set. Here your six year old can indulge in a trip to the spa complete with a mini manicure, pedicure and facial for around $70.00. They provide children’s haircuts, mini-manicures, mini -pedicures and Spa & Glam Girl Parties. Naturally everything is geared to the youngsters from the high-heeled shoe chairs to the kid size runway and purple themed pedicure pits. In addition to the haircuts, the beauty salon offers highlights, updo and what they call “age appropriate make-up!”

Monkey Dooz is an adult salon and spa in everything but size. Here kids rule and everything is designed to appeal to the youngsters. It’s all housed in a child’s fantasy rain forest land where giant stuffed monkey hang from the trees. Kids can get haircuts while sitting in Jungle Jeeps or have parties in the pastel rooms lined with cartoon characters. Titti Frutti manicures and Chocolate pedicure are available at $35.00 . They say that little girls love the chocolate manicure and pedicure where their hands and feet are placed in baths of chocolate bubbles and slathered with chocolate lotion before applying the child’s favorite color. Who knew?

Club Libby Lu caters to the 6-12 year old and offers a place for girls to shop, spend time with friends, have a birthday party , or even create sparkle lip gloss or bath gel. They can visit the Style Studio where they can get a “Libby Du” make over

So what message are we sending to these youngsters? It seems totally at odds with the idea that kids should be allowed to be just kids. We live in age where we profess to encourage girls and boys to embrace their own uniqueness and just be themselves . It seems to me that we sending the wrong message here.

It’s right up there with beauty pageants for kids and excessive organized sports. It seems we’ve lost what it means to be a kid.
