“Roberta Smith, age 101, learned firsthand from her grandmother, a former slave, that there was nothing more important than your own independence”

Roberta Smith was born in Henderson, Texas in 1906. She was the daughter of a sharecropper and granddaughter of a slave. Her mother had 12 children and lived until she was 105. Roberta didn’t see a doctor until 1984 and she says that he studied her body and said that she was good for another 20 years!
She took in washing and ironing for what ever she could get; sometimes for a gallon of milk or a dozen eggs. Back then you could buy a 48lb sack of flour for $1.00, 100lbs of sugar for $7.00 and 10lbs of pork chops for 50cents. She has seen many changes in her life and vividly remembers Roosevelt being elected President in 1932 during the Great Depression and the hardships of that time when everyone was looking for work.
Despite a life of ups and downs, Roberta says “I’m the happiest old person”. She believes in hard work and taking care of yourself. Today, Roberta still lives on her own and provides for herself. What a great spirit!

Happy July 4th!
