Free Retirement Seminars

If you are like me financial companies offering free seminars with free lunches are currently bombarding you with requests to attend. Does that sound familiar? I have attended one of those seminars and the follow-through process afterwards. Following is a synopsis of what I found:

The course was broken down into the following segments:

  • Investment basics
  • Impact of Inflation
  • Social Security
  • Taxes
  • Retirement Income alternatives
  • Long-term investment alternatives
  • Risk management and Estate Planning
  • Medicare
  • Possible impact of long-term convalescent care
  • Insurance

The post seminar process comprised a one-on-one conference with a second follow-up meeting. At the first meeting goals were discussed along with current situation relative to retirement planning. At the second meeting they presented a report, which amounted to an investment plan. The seminar company’s products were at the heart of the plan, as you would expect. The plan was impressive to the extent it laid out probabilities for success. Ultimately I decided to do it myself.

Pros and Cons

The information presented was interesting and, most importantly, I learned a few things at the seminar. The report was interesting but was probably simple for them to produce using their software. It is obviously a sales pitch with the seminar and lunch (or dinner) as the hook. I did not have to attend the post seminar meetings but did so out of interest. I had always intended to use this as a learning experience. I can imagine some companies will be more pushy and a pain so it all depends who you get and your ability to say no.

All in all, this was a positive experience if you want to learn about a very important subject.
