Medicine has changed and how!

Ode to the Woes (of modern medicine)

When I was young, many moons ago
There wasn’t many pills or bottles ‘tis so
The medicine cabinet held but three
Yes, there they are now I can see
Vicks Vapor Rub, Aspirin and Pepto!

They say ignorance is bliss and it must be true
For our Doctors didn’t need much of a clue
‘cause our ailments were easily diagnosed
For no matter the illness or questions posed
‘Twas always tummy upset, headache or flu!

If things got more serious more or less
With orders to go to your bed and rest
Then they would put you on the waiting list
Before unraveling the final twist
And send you to hospital for a more scientific test!

Schoolteachers punished pupils to some degree
When they would misbehave in class, you see
They’d never heard that anyone not paying attention
Didn’t deserve a good smack or even detention
‘Cause they simply had the disease called ADD!

Back then, we went by old folk’s lore
We got plenty of exercise that is for sure
And eat our three servings of veggies and fruit
Asking for more, no that was mute
We’d walk miles until our poor feet were sore

We’d use our eyes all day and night long
And go to bed without a clue we could belong
To the group who had the dreaded “dry eye”
( Now, I’d only ever heard of having a sty)
Or worse the awful “restless leg syndrome”

And who would have ever guessed
That with all the things that I am blessed
Enough to eat and material things
And money to buy plenty of bling
I’d need a pill to keep from being depressed

Today we replace body parts just like
We service our cars (used to be bikes)
New hips and knees are common you see
To much time on the couch watching TV
What next? New upper torso, Yikes!

Our bodies have grown this way and that
Which is another way of saying we’re fat!
But there’s lipo, staples, and plenty of pills
To take away inches and improve our ills
(Surely taping our mouths would do just that!)

I ‘m doing my best to follow the doctor’s advice
And take Lipitor (before the big mac and fries)
Oh gosh, now I think I’m having a panic attack
So hurry up please and pass the Prozac
For now, they are all part of the daily supplies

My medicine cabinet looks different it’s so
From all those all days many years ago
When three bottles could cure all our known ill
No need for hundreds of little colored pills
Just Vicks Vapor Rub, Aspirin and Pepto!
