Many retirees and early retirees realize that they would like to volunteer as a way to replace the purpose and social interaction they had on the job but don’t know how to go about it. Indeed according to a recent study by Volunteer Match found that 63% of people 55 or older express interest in volunteering but are not doing so. Not finding the right opportunity and not knowing where to begin top the list of reasons of not doing it.
Knowing what direction to take and how to go about it can help
- List the skills and experience you bring to a volunteering job
- Add personal interests, including those you couldn’t pursue while you were working
- Know what schedule you want
How to find the right organization
- Use Internet sites that ask for information about your needs and connects you with organizations that match your needs.
- Attend a volunteer fair where you will find organizations that place retirees with non profits.
- Check out local groups that you already know something about
- Talk to friends and family and do your homework
Beware
One of he common mistakes among retirees is to find themselves pulled in several directions that aren’t really satisfying for them. It’s easy to be pulled in lots of directions that keep you busy but not satisfying. Make sure that you do your homework and it doesn’t hurt to contribute time so several different groups until you find the one that really slicks for you.
It can be new!
Don’t be afraid to follow an unexplored interest that you feel passionate about. It might require attending classes or seminars but the rewards will be well worth the effort.
