As a grandparent there is a big temptation to buy gifts for your grandkids that you , for one reason or another , would probably never would have brought for your own kids One that you should definitely get mom and dad’s blessing on is the latest in cell phones that are geared for kids as young as 5 years old. Although I’m not convinced a 5 year old needs a cell phone to go along with the school supplies and lunch box when they make they way to first grade I am also convinced that it’s just a matter of time before they all have them!
Firefly Glowphone: “The Mobile Phone for Mobile Kids”
Definitely, the most toy like of the two. It’s small and shaped to fit into a child’s hand. It’s available in black or pink has no key-pad. Instead it has five large buttons, including one marked with a figure in a dress that can be set to dial mom and a corresponding key for dad… Cost is $50.00 but it doesn’t require a contract. Calls will run as low as 10c a minute, with a 35c daily access charge. And it glows in the dark!

Disney DM-S110
This looks more like a regular phone but has accessories available such as cases decorated with Tigger the Tiger. It’s available in pink or silver and features a full keypad, camera and speaker phone. Phones range in price from free (with the purchase of a calling plan) to $200 for a fancy model with Bluetooth, a camera with still and video capabilities and other features. Disney’s calling plans start at $25.00 a month for 200 minutes for an individual child and contracts run two years. Parents are able to pre-select when the child can make or receive calls with the call control feature. Although it does allow an “always-on” numbers that can be dialed in an emergency. Parents can also preset how many text messages or downloads the child is allowed per month.
