The Tale Of Two Bridges

These past few weeks we have seen the story of two bridges appear on our two TV screens. Though never together the two stories are connected in my mind and create a truly negative feeling towards Washington power brokers. In the first, and most recent story, we are all sickened by last weeks bridge collapse in Minneapolis. There is now a media frenzy looking at every bridge and other infrastructure type across these United Sates. The tragedy may not have been foreseen but to those involved I am sure there is much bitterness that this was allowed to happen. Certainly we can’t afford to rebuild every bridge across the country but I am certain that these bridges were never meant to see the traffic loads they get today. Clearly it is a question of priority and expense to upgrade, which takes me to the other story.

Senator Stevens, Alaskan Republican, is being investigated for misusing his office to steer funds to family, friends and business associates. This is not the point of this post but rather his past positions on the infamous “bridge to nowhere”. He was involved in trying to appropriate Federal Funds for building that ridiculous bridge. So, on the one hand we have the collapse of a bridge in Minneapolis and on the other hand we have attempts to build a new bridge to nowhere. How stupid can Washington be? This is not the kind of person we need running our country.
