Older Women dating Younger Men.

While we are all used to changes in attitudes today you might be surprised to know that more and more older women are dating younger men. In a 2003 study by AARP it was revealed that 34 percent of all women over 40 in the survey were dating younger men and 35 percent preferred it to dating older men. Those in the survey cited fun and companionship as the main reasons for dating.

So what has caused this shift in attitude and behavior? One of the reasons is that women have choices today. Over the last 50 years women have become financial independent and are able to support themselves; there are able to pick a man they want to be with rather than a mate to support them and give them social status. In short they do it because they can.
So what unique issues do these couples experience face? Obviously with an age difference each partner is at different places in their life and may have different long-term priorities. But this can be true of same age and can be a part of the adventure and if you are willing to sample each other’s world.

Another big advantage today is that we have high-profile Hollywood couples like Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins showing the way and proving that it can work. A reality show recently aired “Age of Love” that have women in their 20’s vying against women in their 40.s for the heart of a young tennis star. This is all part of the acceptability of older women dating younger men.

Women dating younger men said they appreciated the strength, humor, openness, youth, and passion of their partners. What do the men get? Many men appreciate confident women who are more established and can take care of themselves. Younger men are
attracted to the fact that older women act more mature and seem to be less materialistic than younger women.

For me however, the issue isn’t the age difference but rather all the things that make you fall in love with that person. That’s what will sustain the relationship and strengthen it through the years. Viva L’Amour!
