Following on the news earlier this year that Australia was phasing out the incandescent light bulb comes news today that the UK announced its own plan. They plan to have all incandescent light bulbs phased out by 2011, just 4 years from now. Starting in January the Brits will no longer be able to buy a 150 watt incandescent bulb. 100 watt bulbs will be gone in 2009 and so on until they are history. Hillary Benn, the UK Environment Secretary, announced that she expects the move to save 5 million tons of CO2 per year. That is a very large number when you stop to take it in. It makes me wonder why anyone can sell an incandescent bulb anymore.
In another comment she mentions other wasteful products, in particular pointing out some televisions that need to be phased out. I haven’t checked those out but it makes some sense to me that old fashioned tube TVs would likely waste a lot more energy as heat than modern digital systems. Come to think of it, my computer monitor is not a flat panel and probably should be replaced. Maybe that’s a good enough reason to just buy a new computer. Thanks for making me think of that Mrs. Benn.
I wonder when the US will announce a plan?

Why, that would mean pulling our heads out of the sand and acknowledging there’s a problem, instead of this endless debate on whether or not its really as bad as they say it is. No other country is having that debate, because no other country is as willfull or stubborn as we are.
By the way, for anyone wanting more Compact Flourescent lightbulbs, Sam’s has an eight pack for $10. In some parts of California, the electric companies are subsidizing them and Sam’s has the same 8 pack for under $1.
It might happen but I don’t see it coming from top down. I’ve seen a big initiative for companies to go green over the last couple of years. It might start then and influence people’s thinking.
