Technology for the Aging – Part 2

Yesterday I talked about some technologies that are already on the market to help the elderly. Today I’m talking about some that are in the future, all driven by the boomers and an aging population. You probably have read about a recent show in Japan showing robots helping the elderly in many ways; from home help to your own personal robot nurse, blood test and all. In my research I came across an organization called “Cast”, which stands for “Center For Aging Services Technology”. Intel is involved in cast so another heavyweight is joining the aging boomer bandwagon. Truth is we are aging and we are older than we think we are, just ask the kids. While on the site of Cast I watched a wonderful little video put together to demonstrate a vision of elderly independence in step with the needs of family members to make sure all is well.  It is a well balanced view of how an individual, his family, his friends and the healthcare profession could operate in an enabling way in the future. I watched the video and I see technology that is available today. It just takes the organization of technology and a willingness to get it done. What is different today is that the boomers, all 76 million of us, are get older and the marketing folks are following us, as always. The link to “Cast” video is below.

Two kinds of comments from the people I talk to: Positive and Negative
    1. Healthvault is a big joke — a company like Microsoft should not rush out with a product or service in such poor quality. It is half baked and not really usable at this time. The feeling for this announcement is only for Microsoft marketing purpose and shows the immaturity and weakness of Microsoft plan in dealing with consumer health care issue.
    2. Healthvault brought a great vision — whatever you see in this beta release is the beginning of a grand vision. It is a great leadership played by Microsoft to bring in many software and hardware companies together to serve the goal: consumer empowerment. With the resource (including talent) that Microsoft possesses and gaining idea from public comments, they are going to create another great opportunity in health care domain.
