England Vacation

Of course, London is a huge attraction and there are many things to see and do. Apart from all the usual things a couple of small things stand out in my mind: The first came in a visit to the tower of London. Yes we did all the usual things like the crown jewels but afterwards I walked down to the Thames and noticed a small galleon type of ship. Turns out it was a replica of Sir Francis Drake’s ship, the “Golden Hind”. We were allowed aboard for a look inside. Even though this was a replica it was amazing to me that men would even sail down the river aboard this small wooden vessel let alone across the Atlantic. The sailors must have been short because there was next to no headroom for me. The Golden Hind has since been moved to Devon where Sir Francis Drake came from. You can see it here. Devon is down in the Southwest corner and is beautiful. Well worth a trip and its right next to Cornwall which is mentioned further down this post. The second memorable item was seen on a trip to Windsor Castle just outside London. What stands out is seeing Henry the Eighth’s battle armor hanging on the wall. He too must have been very short and squat. What history though!

If you are more into small villages with thatched roof homes as seen in picture postcards then the Cotswolds are for you. This is an area that starts just north of Oxford, which is itself just north of London, and runs north towards the Midlands. Although best seen by driving, you need to be brave to drive over there. The English are aggressive drivers and will try to go past you even on the narrowest of country lanes. If that bothers you then take a tour. The Cotswolds are also home to many castles and old manor houses. The region has an official website which you will find here.

If you want small fishing villages nestled along a rugged coastline then Cornwall will be your best bet. Bed and breakfast is a good way to go in this neck of the woods. Expect quaint and old. Of course that sums up much of England. Polperro is a good example of what you will see. Go here.

If you want mountains then the Snowdonia National Park in Northern Wales will offer you beauty and a chance to hike and camp. You can walk up to the top of Mount Snowden but many take the train. If you want to see a scenic slide show of the Snowden train go here.

Shakespeare country is also beautiful, Stratford-Upon-Avon being just how you would imagine it. The river Avon is a small picturesque river that complements the town very nicely. You can visit Shakespeare’s birthplace and also visit Ann Hathaway’s home. Stratford is a good two hour drive north of London. Naturally they have a website.

It is good to get out of London!
