Veteran Jobs

That’s not to say a job for armed forces veterans but veteran workers, as in boomers and older folks, which obviously include many former forces veterans. I keep reading that boomers are so unprepared for retirement that they plan to work for a few years after normal retirement age, apparently out of necessity. I don’t buy that for a couple of reasons. First, health issues will invariably change many of those plans and, secondly, when the opportunity actually arrives I think many will just retire anyway, despite what has been said up to that point.  Despite my thoughts on the subject it is true that people are setting up businesses to help those older folks find work. The entrepreneurial spirit of America is rising to the occasion and doing what it does best, creating business opportunities.

There are companies springing up, mostly on the Internet, to connect older workers and employers. If you want to check out a list of sites then go to U.S. News & World Report here. The trouble with Internet sites is that many of the jobs are just not “around here”, here being wherever you are. These sites have to be really large, like Monster.com, to have any chance of covering a large geographical area with a lot of jobs. The other problem with this picture is that I don’t see employers buying into the notion that they need all that experience on the job. Sure it’s worth something to them but obviously not that much. I suspect they will just deploy technology to compensate; after all they have been increasing the productivity numbers year after year with such a strategy. That is, doing more with less people.

No, I think those that believe the sky will fall when boomers retire are wrong. Things will change to accommodate the reality as it always does. I don’t think any generation in the past has believed the world would survive without them and this is no different.  Those internet job connections will fail but they will try.

It’s an interesting time. It really feels to me like a new revolution, much like the industrial revolution. It’s now the internet and so much of what we do today occurs there. I think for most vererans, it will simply pass them by.
