Hanging baskets aren’t just for the summer months and can add color and interest even through some of the coolest months. While you may be accustomed to planting ivy in your summer baskets you may not have considered it for the fall and winter. However, the glossy, red and gold tinged foliage of the tiny flowered evergreens will add some much needed color during some of the coldest months.
Evergreens are much hardier than the summer bedding plants and will only need a weekly watering unless the weather is particularly dry.
You Will Need:
Hanging basket
Plastic liner
1 Cotoneaster (Autumn Fire)
1 Greater Periwinkle
1 Vinca major “Variegata”
Method:
You will need moss and plastic liner (with slits for drainage) to help hold the water
Water the plants well
Line the basket with moss and add the plastic liner
Fill with compost
Plant “Autumn Fire” to the rear
Trail the periwinkle and other cotoneaster over and through the sides.
Add more compost and water well.
Hang basket in sun or shade, by a door or window or wherever you need some color
Helpful Hints:
Feed the plants after a few months
If the evergreen plants appear to be drying out, immerse in a bucket of water for a few minutes.
Do not water if the roots are frozen, otherwise the leaves will desiccate
Encourage the trailing plants to cover the base of the basket
