We all know the importance of keeping physically fit but have you ever wondered how you can stay mentally fit as you age? Can we actually influence and protect our brains from mental decline as well as from diseases like Alzheimer’s ? We all expect the normal wear-and-tear of aging to include some short term memory loss, perhaps some loss of clarity of thought, concentration, and focus. But surprisingly, there are some people who manage to defy the aging process: somehow their brains are able to compensate to stay sharp. Current thinking is that it is probably due to a number of reasons.
- Sufficient mental stimulation
- A supply of new experiences
- Plenty of social interaction
The theory of “use it or loss it” really applies here. Pursue new interests. New activities and activities that involve concentration will help to exercise that muscle and keep it strong. Books are a great source for learning and in turn will enhance memory. Games like chess and cards can help keep your mind sharp.
Diet is important and you should make sure that you are receiving the correct vitamins and supplements. Adequate supplies of Vitamin B-6, B-12 and Folate are essential along with Vitamin E which is required in the maintenance of cell membranes.
Exercise. Research has shown that brisk walking regularly 3 days a week gives a 15 percent boost in mental functioning. Funny enough keeping your body fit also benefits you mentally.
Humans are social animals and being connected to other humans seems to be beneficial to your mental health
It surprised me to learn that studies have shown that people who are purposeful, self-disciplined and organized are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.
So the moral of this story is to stay inquisitive, active and don’t be afraid to take that muscle we call a brain for a spin on a regular bases.
