If you shopped online on what has been become known as Cyber Monday then you had plenty of company. A record 72 million Americans were expected to search the Web for bargains and spend at least $700 million on line. With that in mind here are some tips to keep in mind while you shop on line:

Make sure that the site you are shopping on is secure before you input any personal information. How do you tell? Look for a little padlock in the corner of the page or an “s” after the “http” in the URL address.

Compare prices on similar products before you purchase by visiting comparison Web site, such as Bizrate, Shopzilla, pricegrabber or Froogle. You will also find customer reviews and merchant ratings on the sites.

Some stores, especially large national chains, allow you to purchase your item online and pick it up at the store — often resulting in free shipping on a low-priced sale item found only online.

You may be able to get a discount on your purchase or shipping costs (sometimes both).Decided what you want and then go to Google or MSN Search and enter the merchant’s Web site with the word “coupon” or promotional code”

Web sites such as 247malls and monkeybargains offer coupons and coupon codes towards purchases and shipping costs for hundreds of merchants.

Use a credit card, not a debit card, for Internet purchases. Debit cards don’t have the same protection as credit cards when it comes to limiting your liability for fraudulent use

Most online sites will let you use different delivery addresses for different items. This way you have the advantage of shopping at home and having the items shipped directly to the recipient.

Sign up to receive e-mail alerts from your favorite online retailers. You can often get previews to new products and special offers that cannot be found anywhere else.

Be sure to review your credit card and bank statement carefully each month for unauthorized charges and notify your credit card company or bank immediately if you notice any charges you didn’t authorize.

After placing an order online, you should receive a confirmation page that reviews your entire order. It should include the costs of the order, your customer information, product information, and the confirmation number.
