My Favorite Christmas Movies

Everyone has a favorite Christmas movie. Often the most beloved family Christmas movies are the ones that show the true Christmas spirit. My list of favorites have some that fit right in with that message but there are some that don’t.Here they are, in no particular order

A Christmas Story (1983)

I remember watching this movie our first Christmas in America. I had never seen the movie before but it became an instant favorite for me. I wanted Ralphie Parker to get a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200 Shot Range Model Air Rifle even though his parents thought he would shoot his eye out. Full of funny little details that make it easy to watch over and over

It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

This movie is hard to beat and contains all the ingredients, romance, pathos, and a happy ending to make it one of the best loved movies of all time. A man about to commit suicide during the holidays because he’s financially ruined is stopped by an angel who shows him what life would be like if he’d never existed. Poignant and sure to produce a tear or two no matter how many times you have seen it!

Blackadder’s Christmas Carol (1988)

Not your average Christmas fair I’ll admit but full of English humor, care of Rowan Atkinson’s Blackadder. It’s a parody of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. In this version Ebenezer Blackadder starts out nice and it’s only after the ghost of Christmas (Robbie Coltrane) has shown him how truly rotten people are, that Blackadder reverts. After proclaims, “Bad guys have all the fun.” he wakes up bitter, vengeful, greedy for money, and insulting.

The Nightmare before Christmas (1993)

Tim Burton’s take on Christmas is full of ghoulish images as Jack Skellington the Pumpkin King, tired of life in Halloween land stumbles upon Christmas town and decides to try and combine Halloween and Christmas. Novel and different

Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

In this 1947 movie, a Macy’s executive tries to find a new store Santa. She hires an old man named Kris Kringle who claims to be the one-and-only Santa Claus. This gets Kris into trouble and, he ends up being hospitalized for some kind of delusional disorder. A young man comes to his aid and tries to help Kris prove that he is really and truly Santa.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)

I love this original 1966 animated classic that really does justice to the creativity of Dr Seuss. The Grinch tries to ruin Christmas for the Whos in Whoville by stealing their presents, trees, and holiday treats. What better way to shown the real Christmas spirit than to see the Grinch have a change of heart and find love and friendship with the Whos?

A Christmas Carol (1951)

Another perennial favorite based on a story by Charles Dickens story about an old miser named Scrooge who learns compassion when three ghosts visit him on Christmas Eve. There are lots of versions out there but I like this version because of Alastair Sims wonderful performance

The Bishop’s Wife (1947)

This oldie is a romantic comedy which tells the story of an angel who comes to Earth to help a bishop with his problems. The movie has aged well and it’s easy to see what draw audience to Cary Grant. It also features a great movie quote: “The only people who grow old were born old to begin with”

Joyeux Noel’ (2006)

This Oscar-nominated drama tells the true story of German, French and Scottish troops in WWI who called a ceasefire for Christmas Eve. The message for peace on earth comes through despite its unexpected venue.

I’m a fan of It’s a Wonderful Life. I don’t think I’ve ever actually watched it straight through from beginning to end, but I’ve seen it in pieces often enough to be able to recite a lot of the lines.
