According to research New Years resolutions aren’t as popular as they used to be. I’m not surprised since most people give up them before the end first month or two into the New Year. . Since we all have the best of intentions when we first commit, why is it that things goes so wrong so quickly? The truth is most people are not 100% committed to doing it and do not plan for success. Lack of support and fear are also high on the list for failureMost people don’t think they will succeed.
Personally, I think the New Year is a great time to look ahead and decide what changes you would like to make for the following year. I prefer to have goals rather than resolutions. Goals are different to resolutions. A goal is something you plan to achieve a desired end-point; a resolution is a commitment made to a project. Goals can be broken up into smaller segments to make the end easier to attain and failure less frequent.
Losing weight is one of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions and probably the one most fraught with disaster. It can be a daunting task too but if the task was broken down it would be easier to stick to. Instead of resolving to loose weight why not plan to start to live healthier and starting with small steps; eating out less, cutting done on portion size, eating more fruits and vegetables. Don’t try to master all the changes at once but take it one step at a time. Gradually adding “healthier’ choices to your diet and life style will give you a sense of achievement and keep you motivated for continued success.
Spending more quality time with family is another popular resolution. Although saying you will set aside time each day is a good start it isn’t enough. Without a real plan and commitment it’s too easy to let things slide. Make a goal to find something new the whole family enjoys doing together…it can be simple as going for an adventure walk or spending more time at the dinner table discussing each others day or a completely new activity.  Again small steps are better and planning one new activity or change a week and sticking to it is better than promising changing no one wants to stick to. Remember it shouldn’t feel like work or a chore!
