Although not yet a “Senior”, like millions of others, I will become one during the next Presidency. There are many important issues but the fate of Medicare and Social Security will likely be managed by the next President. For this reason I pay particular attention to this topic. In previous posts I have mentioned that Obama seems to be more in tune with my concerns than just about anyone else running in either party. I have just been to the Democratic hopefuls websites, or at least the top three, to get the latest. Clinton’s site does not mention either one of these topics unless it is buried in the bowels somewhere, which says that it is not a major topic for her; likewise with John Edwards. He makes more of a splash with his Mega Healthcare plan which I suppose can incorporate Medicare. The same may be true for Clinton. Obama has a section of his site devoted to Senior issues, particularly Medicare and Social Security. The fact that they made it to his major issues list does say something over the other two candidates. It says I’m important to Obama. Of course it can be just marketing to this group but the first step is recognition.
Social Security and Medicare are huge problems facing the next Presidency and to wrestle the issue to the ground takes an acceptance that there is a major problem. I’m sure all the candidates will say there is a problem needing confrontation when asked, but it is when not asked that the truth comes out. It’s not pandering to the questioner but rather an internal position before being asked. That’s why Obama is more likely to get my vote if I vote for a Democrat. You can read his position on these issues here.
