I’m curious about the so-called Marketing taboo words that people can’t say to Boomers. These are considered insulting, inaccurate or just plain silly. I remember most of these applying to my parents but I haven’t given them any serious thought related to me, until now. Following are the words and my take on it:
Senior Citizen: Applies to all people older than me; always.
Retiree: I’m not sure what this even means. Retired from life? Retired from the old life? What?
Aging: This happens to everyone from the moment of conception.
Golden Years: The Golden Years are always right now!
Silver Years: This assumes the hair actually stays on the head.
Mature: My parents never thought this would happen. I think it may have happened in my 20’s but I’m not sure.
Prime Time: Isn’t this a TV show?
Here are a few other terms:
Out to pasture: Fat chance!
The rocking chair: It’s just a chair.
The twilight years: Is someone turning out the lights?
I suppose those Marketing guys are right but for the wrong reasons. I don’t dislike the terms I just don’t think they apply. “You talking to me?” I ask. No, you had better treat me like always. Nothing special here, just another time in our lives when change occurs; change is life, life is change.

Thank goodness most of us don’t see ourselves as ready to be put out to pasture just yet…gotta lotta living to do still!
