If at First You Don’t Succeed

It has often struck me that among the common traits and characteristics of entrepreneurs are the less touted but familiar truths that many have had a fair share of failure too. Few of them have had a straight path to success. Infact, they might even argue that the learnt more from failure than success. The big difference between them and most people isn’t a matter of being smarter or instinctively knowing what the next big consumer product is, rather it’s much more about accepting the challenge of going beyond their own comfort zone and venture into unfamiliar territory. Successful people don’t fear failure but merely view failure as a temporary setback. They take what they have learnt and build on it.

Fear of failure can hold you back in life and I’m a big believer that life offers opportunities to everyone: some more than others but it are those that are willing to take those opportunities that do best in life. It’s an important lesson to teach your children and they should also know that almost every successful person has failed before succeeding. The only people who’ve never failed are those who have never tried. And that can leave you with a lifetime of regrets.

I’ve always felt that its such a shame that most companies constantly stay that they want innovative thinkers and people who think outside the box When in truth they only want them when as long as they are successful…they have no stomach for failure and give no time to develop free thinkers and those with an entrepreneurial spirit.

If failure meant that you had to give up then life would have been very different for:

Abraham Lincoln who failed numerous times; he was defeated and rejected, but it didn’t stop him from running, and then becoming, one of America’s most recognized and respected presidents.

Thomas Edison failed thousands of times before he successfully invented the light bulb. He never would have succeeded had he given up trying.

Always have dreams and if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!
