It has been a long time since living there but great memories persist:

  • The countryside is not only beautiful but free of critters that might embed, or poison or eat me.

  • Everywhere is close by, even the next town.

  • Who can forget Tommy Cooper, The Two Ronnies, Morcombe and Wise, and Norman Wisdom. They were all hilarious.

  • England wins the World Cup of soccer at Wembley stadium in 1966. Boy it’s been a long time!

  • History is everywhere. I mean houses older than the U.S. Constitution

  • Growing up at the time of The Beatles, Rolling Stones and the rest of the British invasion.

  • Fish and chips wrapped in newspaper, salt and vinegar liberally applied. Yummy!

  • The English pub.

  • Benny Hill and his girls. How about the little old man he always pats on the head.

  • Doctor Who

  • The Royal Family when it was respected. The Queen’s Coronation when I was a small boy.

  • Wall-to-wall soccer, either playing or watching.

  • Dating the woman of my dreams. Yep, she is still here.

I would add, “having a cup of tea in an English garden”

My wife and I recently visited England so I now have context for some of what you mention. Everything is close and history is everywhere. Best fish and chips I’ve ever had, which I would have expected. Also, best Tiki Masala I’ve had at a rest stop off the freeway, which I would not have expected.

I hope you enjoyed the visit. I always do when I go over.
