AARP Website Facelift

AARP is getting ready to launch their new web site with features that are popular in social networking communities around the net. Think MySpace for the aging. This site is easier to navigate than the current AARP website, mainly through the use of tabs and sub-tabs. The old favorite content is there but they have now added greater community oriented themes or features. For example, you can sign up and have your own ‘journal’, which is another way of saying ‘blog’. Journals are located under the ‘community’ tab where more choices are to be had. You can join a group, share pictures and share videos.

Groups are found in all social networking sites these days meaning AARP is just tapping into the trend. Although MySpace is targeting every human walking the planet, AARP obviously has its existing customer base of the aging. The idea, or market, is now segmenting into smaller subsets as folks like AARP start to share the online community market. Ultimately this normal market mechanism will detract from sites like MySpace. With AARP targeting people 50+ years old they clearly want to take this part of the social networking market. If they don’t then MySpace could easily take the market from AARP.

The site is very nice. Although the current site is still active you can test drive it yourself here.
