Ever Thought About Cryonics?

I was curiously ‘Googleing’ Cryogenics today and came across the Wikipedia definition, which refers to the study of very cold temperatures. The actual term I was curious about is Cryonics; the freezing of people so that one day in the far off future they might be ‘awakened’ and the future state of medicine can cure whatever ails them at the time of their death. I was wondering if people were actually doing this. It turns out there is a company called “The Cryonics Institute’ based in Michigan. Their website has some interesting stats which I quote:

Members – 718

Funded members with Suspended Animation Contracts – 47

Human Patients in Cryostasis – 86

Pets in Cryostasis – 52

So people are actually doing this and I was bowled over by the pet numbers. This is pretty expensive but I guess some people have nothing to lose. Whether it works or not is anyone’s guess. I think if anyone had been brought back from the dead we would have heard about it. To me this is a real long shot but clearly some folks have paid big bucks to ‘give it a try’.

Yes I have thought about cryonics and I am a member of The Alcor Life Extension Foundation. I live in Asheville NC

Cameron interesting that you said “far off future”. I joined alcor because I came to believe that we humans have a high probability of achieving cost effective techniques to stop all aging and death by natural causes within the next 25 to 40 years. The biotechnology and molecular nanotechnology that will help this come about will shortly thereafter enable the restoration of people in cryogenic suspension biostasis.

I have know about cryonics since I was a child and I thought the time it would take to develop the necessary technology was a barrier to success. When I read “Engines of Creation” by K. Eric Drexler I immeadiatly started the process of signing up.

FYI One of my areas of special interest is the history of science and technology & ecologically sustainable technology and in my estimation the vast majority of children born to middle class families with health insurance in the US today will not die of natural causes. War making, weapons of mass destruction are other risks that we are doing far to little to mitigate.
